Communities of religious brothers in the U.s.
There are two kinds of communities in which religious Brothers live, pray, and minister. Some of these communities are "all-Brother" communities in which there are no priests or seminarians. Other communities are known as "mixed" or clerical communities in which some or even most of the members may be priests or seminarians. The composition of the membership depends largely on the institute's founding charism and the kinds of ministry in which the community engages.
Opportunities for ministry vary from one community to the next. Some communities are focused on a particular ministry such as nursing (Alexian Brothers) or education (in the case of Christian Brothers.) Other communities participate in a wide range of ministries and Brothers in these communities have a variety of ministry options.
